Drug Uses

Tegretol (Carbamazepine) is used to control certain types of epileptic seizures. It also helps to treat severe pain of the jaw or cheek caused by a facial nerve problem (trigeminal neuralgia). It might also be used by your doctor in other cases as he deems fit.

Usage

Following the dosage instructions of your doctor is the best way to use any medication. If you are unsure or do not remember the instructions then you may read the medicine label for more detailed information.

You may choose to take Tegretol with a meal or without one.

Eating grapefruit increases the risk of the side effects of the drug.

Please drink a full glass of water with Tegretol.

It is very important that you complete the dosage schedule and do not interrupt it in between without seeking prior consultation from your doctor.

Taking your medication at the same time each day is a tried and tested method to avoid missing any doses.

Drug Class and Mechanism

Tegretol is classified as an anticonvulsant. It controls seizures by blocking certain nerve impulses in the brain. It also alters nerve impulses in certain facial nerves thereby helping to treat rigeminal neuralgia.

Missed Dose

Despite your best attempts at remembering, if you still miss out on a dose, then take it as soon as you remember about it. But keep in mind that you will have to adjust your next dose by spacing it out by 4 to 5 hours. If this is not possible, then the best thing to do would be to skip the missed dose and continue with your normal dosage schedule.

Never try to compensate for the missed dose by taking a double dose together. It may cause adverse effects.

Storage

Store Tegretol at room temperature, between 68 and 77 degrees F (20 and 25 degrees C). Always keep it in a cool dark place that is not directly exposed to sources of heat or moisture and sunlight. Protect it from kids and pets.

Warning/Precautions

Doctors advise against using Tegretol if you are allergic to any ingredient in it or allergic to tricyclic antidepressants (e.g., amitriptyline), cyclobenzaprine, or similar medicines or if you have conditions like history of bone marrow problems, the blood disorder porphyria, or other serious blood disorders; you are taking nefazodone; severe heart problem called heart block (atrioventricular block); you are taking a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) (e.g., phenelzine) or have taken an MAOI within the last 14 days.

Tegretol can cause more sunburns so be careful not to expose yourself to the sun for long hours.

It also lowers your ability to fight infections thus making you susceptible to fever, sore throat, rash, or chills.

It also reduces the number of clot-forming cells (platelets) in your blood. So be careful and avoid getting injured or bruised.

Tegretol may increase the risk of getting dizziness or drowsiness. This risk greatly increases if you combine it with alcoholic beverages. So please avoid them while using Tegretol. Also, avoid undertaking any tasks which require mental alertness (driving, handling heavy machinery etc).

The medicine is known to interfere with certain tests like thyroid function tests and may also give false results to certain pregnancy tests.

Do not star using the suspension form from the tablet form and vice versa without informing your healthcare provider.

Please inform your lab technician or surgeon that you are taking Tegretol before you undergo any emergency surgical procedure including dental operations.

Pregnancy Info

If you are expecting a child or are planning to have a child in the near future, then consult your doctor before using Tegretol to discuss any possible threats to the unborn baby.

If you are a nursing mother and breast feed your baby, then too, seek consultation before using Tegretol as it is excreted in the breast milk and may enter the baby and cause harm to it.
