Drug Uses

Emsam is useful for the accurate treatment of patients suffering from depression. However it can also be made useful for treating certain other conditions as and when determined by your medical practitioner.

Following the dosage instructions of your doctor is the best way to use any medication. If you are unsure or do not remember the instructions then you may read the medicine label for more detailed information.

You may choose to take Emsam with a meal to avoid an upset stomach or without one.

Please drink a full glass of water with Emsam.

It is very important that you complete the dosage schedule and do not interrupt it in between without seeking prior consultation from your doctor.

Taking your medication at the same time each day is a tried and tested method to avoid missing any doses.

Drug Class and Mechanism

Emsam being a MAOI or monoamine oxidase inhibitor is useful for treating depression. But what is the exact mechanism of Emsam is still unknown.

Missed Dose

Despite your best attempts at remembering, if you still miss out on a dose, then take it as soon as you remember about it. But keep in mind that you will have to adjust your next dose by spacing it out by 4 to 5 hours. If this is not possible, then the best thing to do would be to skip the missed dose and continue with your normal dosage schedule.

Never try to compensate for the missed dose by taking a double dose together. It may cause adverse effects.

Store Emsam at room temperature preferably between 20 to 25 degrees C. Always keep it in a cool dark place that is not directly exposed to sources of heat or moisture and sunlight. Protect it from kids and pets.

Doctors advise against using Emsam if you are allergic to any ingredient in it or if you are fluoxetine or have consumed it within the past 5 weeks, even if you are into bupropion, cyclobenzaprine, buspirone, dextromethorphan, meperidine, methadone, propoxyphene, a norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor, a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor or SSRI, St. John's wort, a serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor, a tetracyclic antidepressant, tramadol, or a tricyclic antidepressant, even if you have taken any of them within the past 7 days; also if you are into MAOI, a sympathomimetic, including an amphetamine, certain diet pills or a cold product, or sibutramine, or if you are into a 5-HT agonist, carbamazepine, apraclonidine, , methylphenidate, nefazodone, or oxcarbazepine, or if you are to undergo an elective surgery with general anesthesia or will receive cocaine or local anesthesia which contains sympathomimetic vasoconstrictors, and finally also if you have certain adrenal gland problems.

Discuss your past/current medical history in detail with your doctor before beginning treatment with any new medication. If you are using any herbal supplements or over the counter medication, including vitamin pills, then mention it to your doctor.

Your condition might be monitored or the dosage might be modified to suit you if you are pregnant, or planning to become pregnant, or even if you are breast-feeding, if you are into prescription or nonprescription medicine, dietary supplement or herbal preparation, have allergies to food, medicines, or other substances, have a history of bipolar disorder, mental problems, mania, suicidal thoughts or attempts, or even if you are feeling any uncontrolled muscle movements, also if you have had a history of ulcer, a recent heart attack, heart problems, seizures, blood problems, or even a metabolism disorder.

Emsam has a tendency to react with a number of other medicines like Bupropion, MAOI, cyclobenzaprine, Apraclonidine or buspirone, dextromethorphan, Tramadol, a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor or SSRI, St. John's wort, a serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor, a tetracyclic antidepressant, tramadol, or a tricyclic antidepressant.
