Drug Uses

Zyban is used to help patients to stop smoking. It might also be used by your doctor in other cases as he deems fit.

Usage

Following the dosage instructions of your doctor is the best way to use any medication. If you are unsure or do not remember the instructions then you may read the medicine label for more detailed information.

You may choose to take Zyban with a meal or without one.

You should not crush, break or chew Zyban. It should be swallowed whole.

Please drink a full glass of water with Zyban.

It is very important that you complete the dosage schedule and do not interrupt it in between without seeking prior consultation from your doctor.

Taking your medication at the same time each day is a tried and tested method to avoid missing any doses. The difference between two doses should be 8 hours.

It takes atleast a week for Zyaban to start working. You should discuss with your doctor about the day you will stop smoking on the second week of using Zyban.
Contact your doctor if you have not made any progress till the 12th week.


Drug Class and Mechanism

Zyban is an anti depressant and is used to treat major major depressive disorder and seasonal affective disorder. There is atleast one btrand of zyban that is used to help people stop smoking by reducing cravings and other withdrawal effects.

Missed Dose

Despite your best attempts at remembering, if you still miss out on a dose, then take it as soon as you remember about it. But keep in mind that you will have to adjust your next dose by spacing it out by 4 to 5 hours. If this is not possible, then the best thing to do would be to skip the missed dose and continue with your normal dosage schedule.

Never try to compensate for the missed dose by taking a double dose together. It may cause adverse effects.

For Sexual Drugs

Since it is an erectile dysfunction drug, it must only be used when required. So, there are no chances of a missed dose since it is not taken according to a regular dosage schedule.

Storage

Store Zyban 77 degrees F (25 degrees C). You may also store it between 59 and 86 degrees F (15 and 30 degrees C) for a limited time. Always keep it in a cool dark place that is not directly exposed to sources of heat or moisture and sunlight. Protect it from kids and pets.

Warning/Precautions

Doctors advise against using Zyban if you are allergic to any ingredient in it or if you have conditions like a history of an eating disorder (e.g., anorexia, bulimia) or seizures (e.g., epilepsy); you are suddenly stopping the use of alcohol or sedatives (e.g., benzodiazepines) after long-term use; if you are taking any medicine that contains bupropion.

Discuss your past/current medical history in detail with your doctor before beginning treatment with any new medication. If you are using any of the medicines then please inform your doctor as some of them may interact with Zybane:
Amantadine, antipsychotics (eg, haloperidol, risperidone), corticosteroids (eg, prednisone), insulin, levodopa, MAOIs (eg, phenelzine), nicotine patches, oral hypoglycemics (eg, glipizide), other antidepressants (eg, fluoxetine, amitriptyline), sympathomimetics (eg, pseudoephedrine), theophylline, or tiagabine. These medicines may increase the risk of Zyban Sustained-Release Tablets's side effects.
Carbamazepine, phenobarbital, or phenytoin. These medicines may decrease Zyban Sustained-Release Tablets's effectiveness.
Antiarrhythmics (eg, propafenone, flecainide), beta-blockers (eg, metoprolol), phenothiazines (eg, thioridazine), selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) antidepressants (eg, fluoxetine), or tricyclic antidepressants (eg, nortriptyline). Zyban Sustained-Release Tablets may increase the risk of side effects of these medicines.

Your condition might be monitored or the dosage might be modified to suit you if you have conditions like you are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement; allergies to medicines, foods, or other substances; you or a family member has a history of bipolar disorder (manic depression), other mental or mood problems (eg, depression), suicidal thoughts or attempts, or alcohol or substance abuse; diabetes, kidney problems, high blood pressure, heart problems (eg, congestive heart failure), or a recent heart attack; istory of seizure, head injury, tumor in the brain or spinal cord, or liver problems (eg, cirrhosis)

Pregnancy Info

If you are expecting a child or are planning to have a child in the near future, then consult your doctor before using Zyban to discuss any possible threats to the unborn baby.

If you are a nursing mother and breast feed your baby, then too, seek consultation before using Zyban as some drugs are excreted in the breast milk and may enter the baby.
