Drug Uses
Aleve is administered to patients for the treatment of mild to moderate pain, fever and any kind of inflammation.
Usage
Following the dosage instructions of your doctor is the best way to use any medication. If you are unsure or do not remember the instructions then you may read the medicine label for more detailed information.
Aleve should not be taken more than the prescribed quantity. Aleve should not be crushed, chewed or broken as it is an extended-release or enteric-coated tablet. Such tablets are designed to release the medication slowly inside the body and breaking the drug results in too much medication getting released at once. If you are consuming the liquid form then correct dosage should be measured using marked measuring spoon or medicine cup and not a regular table spoon. If you are using the medicine for a long time then your doctor might want to check you on regular basis for any signs of side effects.
Drug Class and Mechanism
Aleve is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAIDs) like ibuprofen (Motrin), indomethacin (Indocin), nabumetone (Relafen) and several others. Such medications are used in the treatment of mild to moderate pain, fever and any kind of inflammation. These drugs reduce the levels of prostaglandins, chemicals that cause pain, fever and inflammation. Aleve works by blocking the enzyme that produces prostaglandins (cyclooxygenase), thus resulting in lower concentrations of prostaglandins.
Missed Dose
Despite your best attempts at remembering, if you still miss out on a dose, then take it as soon as you remember about it. But keep in mind that you will have to adjust your next dose by spacing it out by 4 to 5 hours. If this is not possible, then the best thing to do would be to skip the missed dose and continue with your normal dosage schedule.
Never try to compensate for the missed dose by taking a double dose together. It may cause adverse effects.
Storage
Store Aleve at room temperature (read medicine label if unsure). Always keep it in a cool dark place that is not directly exposed to sources of heat or moisture and sunlight.
Safety Information
Warning/Precautions
Doctors advise against using Aleve if you are allergic to any ingredient in it or if you are taking aspirin, ibuprofen, or ketoprofen in any form.
Discuss your past/current medical history in detail with your doctor before beginning treatment with any new medication. If you are using any herbal supplements or over the counter medication, including over-the-counter cold, allergy, or pain medication, then mention it to your doctor.
Do not drink alcohol if you are taking this medication as it can increase the risk of stomach bleeding caused by Aleve.
Also do not expose yourself to sunlight for long durations as it increases the sensitivity of the skin to sunlight.
Pregnancy Info
If you are expecting a child or are planning to have a child in the near future, then consult your doctor before using Aleve to discuss any possible threats to the unborn baby.
